DIM weight calculator

Dimensional (DIM) weight is a billing weight carriers calculate from a package's size. Where DIM applies, you pay the greater of DIM and actual weight.

Package

Measure the outside of the package at its longest points.

Carriers measure the packed parcel's outside, bulges included.

Actual weight also rounds up to the next pound at UPS and FedEx.

Carrier and rate type

The DIM divisor, or DIM factor, is the number of cubic inches a carrier counts as one pound, so a lower divisor gives a higher DIM weight for the same box.

Check a billed weight (optional)

Size the overbilled pounds: billed weight minus the billable weight of the right box at its real size.

Illustrative numbers

Billable weight10 lb (DIM)

  1. 14 stays 14, 10.2 becomes 11, and 8.4 becomes 9.
  2. 14 × 11 × 9 = 1,386 in³
  3. 1,386 ÷ 139 = 9.97, rounded up to 10 lb.
  4. 4.6 lb rounds up to 5 lb, so billable weight is the 10 lb DIM weight.

Check USPS

1,386 in³ is not over 1,728 in³, so USPS bills the 5 lb actual weight; Ground Advantage cubic pricing could use a volume tier instead.

As of October 2026, UPS and FedEx apply DIM weight to packages of every size, while USPS applies it only to parcels over one cubic foot (1,728 in³) going to Zones 1–9.

As of October 2026, UPS, FedEx and USPS round every fraction of an inch up wherever DIM applies; before the change dates in the table, each rounded to the nearest inch.

The USPS change covers retail and commercial prices, and any published rule can change with the annual general rate increase (GRI).

Some pricing options skip billable weight: USPS cubic pricing (commercial) prices small parcels by volume tier, USPS Flat Rate by envelope or box, and FedEx One Rate by packaging size, destination and delivery speed.

Out-of-date sources cause errors too: pages written before July 12, 2026 list USPS at 166.
